Woman killed in Punjab for bearing daughters

Chandigarh, April 17 : A woman was allegedly strangulated to death by her husband in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district as he was upset that she had given birth to three daughters, police said.

Paramjit Kaur, 35, who was married in Chabaal village of Tarn Taran, 270 km from Chandigarh, was allegedly murdered by Nishan Singh.

Her brother Surjit Singh told police that Nishan Singh used to beat and torture her earlier also when the couple had two daughters as he wanted to have a son.

Police officials said that they have registered a case on the basis of a complaint from Surjit Singh. They were looking for Nishan Singh, who is absconding.

Punjab has a skewed sex ratio of 893 females per 1,000 males, one of the lowest among the states. The preference for a male child among people is dominant in the state. (IANS)

Simple web browsing may drain your smartphone’s battery

London, Apr 18 : While it is known that free apps, watching a video or playing a game consume your cellphone’s battery, a new study including Indian origin researcher has revealed that merely surfing the internet on mobile comes with an energy cost.

 

Simply loading the mobile version of Wikipedia over a 3G connection devoured just more than 1 per cent of the phone’s battery, while browsing to apple.com, which does not have a mobile version, used 1.4 per cent.

The measurements were then repeated with locally saved versions of the website, facilitating them to separate out the energy needed to render a page from that need to download it.

Javascript and CSS files are used in most modern websites that offer additional functions and styles that are not possible using basic HTML.

However, the researchers found that several websites they looked at were loading large files that were not being used in the page.

For instance, Wikipedia utilizes a custom file Javascript besides a generic library to collapse and expand the different sections on a page, but a great deal of the library goes unused.

By rewriting the site’s Javascript to just perform the required function, Thiagarajan and colleagues were able to decrease the energy consumption from 15 to 9.5 Joules.

Making similar changes to the CSS files and images, they successfully reduced the total energy used in loading Wikipedia from 35 to 25 Joules, a saving of 29 per cent. (ANI)
